Policy Highlights

Canada-Alberta Job Grant

The Canada-Alberta Job Grant is a training program where an employer applies on behalf of their present or future employees for eligible training costs. Employers decide who gets training and what type of training may be needed for their employees.

On August 7, the Alberta Minister of Jobs, Economy and Trade, Matt Jones, released a statement that “put an indefinite hold on the Canada-Alberta Job Grant program for the remainder of the 2024-25 fiscal year.”

This announcement came as a surprise to many people who access the program, including those in the nonprofit sector. 303 nonprofit employers accessed the Canada-Alberta Job Grant in 2022-23, representing 9% of total employers who accessed the grant.

There is immediate concern for short-term consequences on trainees, nonprofit employers, and nonprofits that offer training, who were all taken by surprise by the early end to the Canada-Alberta Job Grant program intake. There is also concern over the long-term plans of the Government of Alberta to continue the program. Read more here

Federal Nonprofit Data Coalition 2025 Pre-budget Submission

The Federal Nonprofit Data Coalition is made up of representatives of nearly 50 nonprofit organizations and institutions, including CCVO. The Coalition focuses on advancing the nonprofit sector's priorities in terms of data collected and shared by the federal government. Their pre-budget submission has three recommendations:

  1. Annual National Survey: Allocate $500,000 annually for regular updates to the national survey of nonprofit organizations and include grassroots (unincorporated) groups.

  2. Dedicated Data Unit: Invest $750,000 to establish a unit within Statistics Canada focused on collecting, analyzing, and sharing data on the nonprofit sector.

  3. Canadian Nonprofit Data Lab: Provide $2 million in 2025-26 and $1 million annually thereafter to create and maintain a Canadian Nonprofit Data Lab.

How Do We Afford to Work in Community? An Interview with Abdifatah Hussein
Amina Mohamed, The Philanthropist Journal

Staying out of trouble, all these things is cool, but the amount of examples we have of people who are working jobs where they genuinely are never happy at the end of the day, they’re not making enough money, they never have opportunities to get more, and they never have opportunities to even see what more can look like is tragic, and the not-for-profit plays into that. Like, I think there’s a very intentional structural problem that goes on every single place that I’ve ever been, and it’s something that I can’t blame on any project manager, or project coordinator, or employing staff for HR. I think it’s just the way that not-for-profits work structurally in Canada. Listen here→
