New Provincial Advocacy Resource | Stampede 2023

Yahoo! 2023 Stampede

The Nonprofit Sector does so much essential work - on the front lines and behind them - and Stampede is a great opportunity to connect with the faces behind it. Huge thanks to all of you who opened your doors and fired up your griddles so we could connect and celebrate.

CCVO co-hosted our own Stampede celebration this year with Public Affairs Association of Canada (Alberta), to a packed house! It was such a pleasure to connect with our fellow members of the nonprofit sector, newly elected MLAs and City councillors. So much so, we’re hoping to make it an annual affair.  See our full Stampede photo gallery and blog here.

2023 Boland Survey

The 2023 Boland Survey is now available for purchase. This year's Survey had close to 25% more participants than last year. The Survey also has a new Volunteer Report and an additional Excel format for the Salaries Report. The Volunteer Report has information about board sizes, number of volunteers, volunteer hours and more.

The Boland Survey is the most comprehensive source of nonprofit sector compensation data in Canada. The Boland Survey includes a Benefits Report, CEO Report, HR Report, and Regional and National Salary Reports. View sample reports from 2019 here.

Survey data will help your nonprofit make informed comparisons and predictions on salary and human resource practices – including flex time, on-boarding, paid time off, professional development practices, employee recognition, and recruitment practices. The Survey costs $559 for nonprofits with 50 staff members or less and $1,000 for nonprofits with more than 50 staff.

Shifting Power Dynamics: Equity, Diversity and Inclusion in the Nonprofit Sector

Equitable Recovery Collective

Black, Indigenous, racialized-led nonprofits and organizations led by those from other underrepresented communities consistently engage in more equity-enhancing practices. These organizations outperform white-led organizations on almost every EDI measure included in this survey by the Equitable Recovery Collective. This is despite the fact that these organizations serve some of the highest-need populations, tend to have fewer resources than white-led organizations, and experience higher demands for accountability from funders.

Organizations led by Black and Indigenous people and those from other under-represented communities are more likely to face challenges with both levels and types of funder support (e.g., lack of long-term and core support). At the same time, these organizations are more likely than white-led organizations to have seen funder expectations related to EDI increase since the pandemic, in spite of the fact this research shows that white-led organizations are the ones lagging in EDI practices.  Read the full report here

Why Settle for Cookie-Cutter People and Culture Practices?
Phil Buchanan, Alyse d’Amico & Leaha Wynn, Stanford Social Innovation Review

Organizational performance depends on thoughtful policies and practices with respect to employees and culture. That may seem obvious, but we have all had our experiences with less-than-stellar situations. The reasons range from inertia (“we’ve always done it this way”) to questionable motivations (perhaps that employee wellness program isn't actually designed with employee wellness as its primary goal).

Often, culture is simply neglected. Although most of us have heard the quotation attributed to Peter Drucker, “culture eats strategy for breakfast,” leaders don’t necessarily act as if they believe it. Because culture is amorphous and subtle, it often takes a back seat to more tangible and seemingly pressing issues on a leader’s to-do list. Read more →
