Nonprofit Connections: An Anti-Racist Approach to Volunteering

 
 

Join CCVO and VolunteerConnector during National Volunteer Week for a thought-provoking panel discussion on the intersection of volunteerism and anti-racism. Rooted in the report An Anti-Racist Approach to Volunteering, the discussion will feature a panel that will create the space for deeper conversations around changing structural aspects of volunteerism, agency, and belonging. Kicking off the discussion will be a short presentation from Dr. Moyo Mutamba, co-author of the report. We welcome you to join us from wherever you are along your journey.

Dr. Sonia Aujla-Bhullar

Dr. Sonia Aujla-Bhullar is a Canadian woman, scholar, researcher, and educator residing in Calgary, Alberta. She holds a BA in Global Development Studies, Master’s in Educational Contexts and a PhD in Curriculum and Learning. As a public-school teacher and published author, Dr. Aujla-Bhullar has studied and researched the unique aspects and challenges of inclusion and diversity within Canada through understandings of post-colonial and critical race theory in education. Her past and present work focuses on anti-racism as an institutional practice, and applications of diversity, inclusion, and equity between schools and racialized communities. As an advocate within community spaces, she is a board member to the World Sikh Organization (WSO) and Co-chair to the City of Calgary’s Anti-Racism Action Committee (ARAC). Her passion and commitment to the work of inclusion and anti-racism is rooted in the desire to enhance our means to realizing a truly equitable society that benefits future generations, including her own 3 young children.

 

Jeff D’Silva

Jeff is a writer, performer, and stand-up comedian born and primarily raised in Calgary AB, Canada. Jeff spent over 6 years as the Manager, Consulting at Propellus and is currently a consultant. In addition to being a working artist in Calgary he enjoys exploring the City and looking for opportunities to create a Calgary that is awesome as it possibly can be.

Jeff has been a volunteer for a variety of organizations including Loose Moose Theatre, Sled Island, Calgary Folk Fest, YMCA. He credits the community organizations that were available to him as a youth as being instrumental in leading to a life changing internship at the Conan O’Brien show as well as paving the way for him to complete his MBA at the Haskayne School of Business.

 

Taylor McNallie

Taylor is a true community builder, wearing many hats that support and uplift numerous communities across the country. As an entrepreneur, Taylor is brand developer and marketing strategist through her company Taylor Made Studios since 2018. She is the producer of the Taylor Made Radio Entertainment Network which further supports Canadian artists and musicians of all genres and mediums, with her podcast Taylor Made Radio being nominated the Best of Calgary in 2019. She is equally as successful within her hosting career, dominating stages for local events, festivals, awards shows, celebrity panels and many more! Taylor is also the co-founder of Inclusive Canada, an organization focused on bringing freedom, liberation and equity to all people, as well as a member of Defund2Fund which works to divest from policing and invest in our communities.

 

Dr. Moyo Mutamba

Moyo Rainos Mutamba, MSW (Social Justice and Diversity) Ph.D. (Social Justice Education) is an Anti-Racism, Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (ARDEI) consultant, leadership coach, and scholar. He finds joy and meaning in supporting organizations to achieve deep cultural shifts. He specializes in integrating ARDEI principles and practices in organizational policies and operations to create cultures of belonging. Additionally, Moyo facilitates in university classrooms as a lecturer of social work (diversity, equity, and inclusion, leadership, mental health) at the University of Waterloo and Community Development at the University of Toronto.

 

sheena swierenga

Sheena believes in the power creativity and resiliency in building strong communities. With a background in education, Sheena has worked in the non-profit and public sector for over a decade in various capacities including community development, people engagement, organization learning and recreation. She thrives when building relationships that nurture and empower people.
